The Campaign "Sí a la Ley" (Yes to the Law) is MYSU’s contribution to the legal change on abortion in Uruguay, through the approval of the whole sexual and reproductive health right defense bill that includes the recognition of the woman’s right to decide on the termination of her pregnancy, before the 12th week of gestation. The bill is being discussed in the House of Representatives, after being passed by the Senate in November, 2007.
The Campaign intends to raise awareness among the population about the reality of the clandestine practice of abortion and its consequences on women’s lives. This practice is a part of the daily world of many people, even tough they may not be fully aware of it. In this sense, the Campaign is an invitation for individual and collective reflection, in families, work environments, study centers, neighborhoods, in order to help bring focus on this issue as part of the daily realities…that cannot be hidden anymore.
If 40% of women aged between 15 and 88 admit to undergoing at least an abortion, the punishment has not met its purpose of preventing this reality. It has only favored clandestinity, profit, secrecy and the double standard. .
In the actions in public spaces, which will take place during September, these percentages will be represented with yellow and red circles and balloons. |
