This September 28, 2009, Day for the Decriminalization of Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean, the practice of illegal and underground abortion in Uruguay remains a reality. Every 20 minutes a woman is faced with the risks imposed on her life and health by the black market in order to obtain the means that will allow her to interrupt a pregnancy.
In view of this reality, and because we don’t want any more surprises, the citizens who are to elect their government in the next national elections want to know what solutions are offered by political candidates for this problem that affects women directly and mostly.
The differences in duration between the political process and the personal and social processes have not only made the decriminalization of abortion an inescapable issue in the human rights agenda of the country, the continent and the world, but also an indicator of the quality of democracy in terms of a system that peacefully coexists in a diverse society and generates equal opportunities to guarantee the conditions for the full exercise of rights to its population, without discrimination of any kind.
Uruguayan citizens, who are informed and responsible, want to know what political candidates propose on this, which is a long-standing issue in the country. The absolute majority (52%) of the electorate thinks abortion should be one of the key issues of the election campaign. 2 out of 3 voters, in turn, demand clear positions from candidates. However, more than 60 % of voters claim that they don’t know where their party or candidate stand on this issue (“Abortion and the Election campaign” Survey carried out by Factum).
Because we don’t want any more surprises, because we have a right to know what our candidates propose, we hope to see you on September 28 at Plaza Libertad at 17:30.
Because they are your rights, assert them! Join the campaign!
